Topic: For Gary Moore

Hey Everybody,
It pains me to write this but the great Gary Moore has passed away.  He was one of my premier inspirations in guitar playing.  Like all young lads in the early 90's I was given a copy of Still Got the Blues.  It blew me away.. His tone a phrasing were perfect.  Gary opened up the door for me and a lot of other blues rock guitarist.  He was a legend, a musical titan and a very nice man.  I only met him twice and he always joked around with me how my records changed style from one song to the next.  He also.. said that he enjoyed my work and congratulated me on the success I was having.  He was a class act and a true original.. Ireland has lost another of its most talented sons today.. I am still a bit in shock so .. I apologize if my words are not as eloquent as they should be.. I have brought out the "Gary Moore" les paul... ( i named one of my guitars after him) and have been playing his stuff today..
Rest in peace.. GM

Re: For Gary Moore

From reading other comments (and as a blues rock guitarist), he has clearly influenced most of the players on here.
I found his playing on Lizzy records to be the biggest influence to me...the speed, but most importantly, the melody behind it (that's why I found people like JB). Black Rose is a mammoth record...and one of my favourite music dvds is Gary Moore and Friends...Dublin 2005. Phenomenal.

Raise a glass...and put it on loud. I'm sure there are a million Moore songs on right now.

Re: For Gary Moore

Joe, love to hear you play one of his songs at your shows!
He was a hell of a player.

Re: For Gary Moore

Very very sad news indeed. I grew up with his music in his hardrock period and loved his Thin lizzy work so very much.
So glad I saw him 2 years ago at the Bospopfestival. I remember that Gary, John Mayall and you Joe met eachother there. There is a nice picture of the 3 of you talking .

He will be missed forever, a TRUE LEGEND passed away.
I'll play his best song I think: Empty rooms now to honour him........and my room is empty too........

RIP Gary.

Re: For Gary Moore

I could not pass by without posting my thoughts here. I was very saddened to hear about the passing of Gary Moore, and I have shed some tears today since hearing the news. Moore was a crucial artist for me in the development of my musical interest.  From my mid-teens I’d been a fan of hard rock and heavy metal and naturally I became a fan of Thin Lizzy, but also became aware of Moore’s solo career.  In the early 1990s his blues albums were very popular, with songs like Cold Day in Hell charting as singles and before long the trio of Still Got The Blues, After Hours and Live Blues became regular staple albums for me. And much how guys like Clapton had led people to the blues 20 years earlier (or Joe is doing so now), Moore was the one who led me to artists like Peter Green, John Mayall, Albert King, Albert Collins and so many others.  I’ve been critical in the past about his attitude and his choice of material, yet generally though as a guitarist ability wise he was untouchable and as Mike mentions which such a diverse range of styles.  I’m glad I had the chance to see him live yet saddened by his premature passing.

Here's one of his most beautiful songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bewTZjjumUo

Re: For Gary Moore

I don't play, which is my deepest regret. But that doesn't stop me from appreciating, and remembering the chills that went down my spine, hearing Gary's amazing skills on the wonderful instrument he made his own. As a music fan, I'm sad to hear of his passing, but he has left a legacy that any artist would be proud of. Thank you Gary!

Re: For Gary Moore

In 1977 I saw Thin Lizzy with Gary Moore as the opening act for Queen. I don't know why but lately I've been thinking of that show. As great as Queen was, it was Thin Lizzy that blew me away. They gave it all they had and their power was amazing. Thank you Gary, Phil, and the rest of the band for a great show and memories.

Re: For Gary Moore

RIP Gary...I'm blown away by this very sad news. A giant of heavy, blues rock is gone. A monster player, and an obvious influence on Joe. I was always hoping he would play the US again, so I could see him live. The last and only time was at Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando (maybe 20 years ago?), and he blew the doors off. He had such a great, fiery style with ungodly technique and phrasing. His last album (I think), "Bad for you Baby" is one of my favorites, and it showed all of his styles to the fullest.
This really sucks, because based on that album, he had much more to offer the world!  sad

Re: For Gary Moore

One of the greats,Gary will be sadly missed by many throughout the rock'n blues fraternity-RIP.

Come on you Blades!

Re: For Gary Moore

We are all in shock, Joe.....Kent and I thought about giving you the  5 disc Gary Moore live set that was released in 2009 when we saw you in Oregon last time, but figured you probably had it...so we gave you the Terry Robb cd instead.......Gary and you are my two favorite guitarists and now one of you is gone....Life is too short....Jam while you can!! RIP Gary......I think it would be totally appropriate to do a Gary cover on tour in the future....You probably don't want to spend 12 minutes on it, but my pick would be Parisienne Walkways....

Re: For Gary Moore

Ken and I were listening to "Still Got the Blues" yesterday on our way home from Mt. Dora and were talking about whether Gary Moore would ever get back here to the states again.  A little weird.  The last cd of his that I bought was "Bad For You Baby" and it's still one of my favorites.  This is so damn sad. He was much too young to die.  Still hard to believe. sad

Re: For Gary Moore

There was a pitition going aroung trying to get  him to come to the USA
not sure how many signatures were to date but I was one of them.

Re: For Gary Moore

A really sad day. Gary was one of my influences and mentor and I was very shocked when I heard the news. I always wanted to see him and was actually trying to plan a trip to Europe to see him. Thank God I have tons of dvd's but it's not the same as experience it yourself.

Joe, for the longest times I've been thinking about the beautiful instrumental 'The Messiah Will Come Again'...I bet you can give your own twist to it and make it a bad*ss song again so it can be heard by a younger generation of blues-rock lovers.

Re: For Gary Moore

It's still sinking in for me. I heard the news via Joe and Sandi on Facebook. My initial reaction was that there was a mistake, but sadly it's true. I was privelaged to have seen him live in April 2009, as part of a Blues festival, which was also the first time I saw Joe. It was a spur of the moment thing, I had been listening to him for maybe a year and had come into some money, so decided on the night of the concert to try and get a ticket. I got pretty close to the stage with my friend and took some decent photos (I'll upload them onto JBXP). As for the concert: no word of exageration but the man blew the place apart. Makes me smile just thinking about it! Personal highlight: I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. He made the guitar sing and cry and make such beautiful noises out of it that I doubt I'll ever hear again sadly.

On a personal level Gary's music, like Joe's and Clapton's, has been a great healer and therapy for me in times of trouble. If I ever wanted to escape from the world for 20 minutes, I'd put on Still Got The Blues, Blues For Greeny, Bad For You Baby or any of his other albums, and let the music take me. That is a talent above being a great player. That, for me, is what music is all about.

Now, I'll end this with a rather excellent video. The reaction is similar to when Joe walks out at The Royal Albert Hall. Sends shivers up my spine!

Rest In Peace Gary, you'll be missed.

Re: For Gary Moore

...like many I guess... played all through my Gary CD's tonight... while driving empty streets... got home and watched my CSB video again... very sombre and feeling the premature sad loss with many!... with Angels now!... God Bless!

...CSB must have been one of the last gigs he played...does anyone know what was his actual last performance?... thanks!
