Topic: Theremins...

Anyone out there have one or can recommend one?  I love what he does on some of his new stuff with the theremin, very Zeppelin/Page sounding!  I hear the Moog is the most accessable and overall very good for the "Whole Lotta Love" thing.  BTW anyone sure how Joe uses it live (through another amp, PA, delay/reverb added, ect)?

Take a look at the linked picture in this thread: http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=9157 !

Joe uses a Moog theremine, going into a Boss DD-3 and a volume pedal; he only uses the tone pitch antenna, instead of the volume antenna he uses the volume pedal, I don't know if he uses an additional preamp, but he doesn't use an additional amp - its going into the pa.

Re: Theremins...

The Theremin is running thru his rig. It doesn't go to the PA direct.

Joe has a different small effect board for the theremine, and I think after that it goes into the PA - I posted this some time ago too, and Joe has corrected a few parts I have written, but not this one.

And I think it would be unlogical if the theremine would go into the guitar amps?! roll

Yup!  As far as I know, Page was the first and maybe only original artist before Joe who used one in rock music.  I think Page has one of the original RCA ones and would use it live for "Whole Lotta Love".  Youtube search Jimmy Page Theremin and you'll see what I'm talking about.  I just can't get enough of the theremin in the breaks of "Ballad of John Henry" on the live versions.  I think I've seen Joe use it occasionally on the "Django/Just got Paid/Dazed and Confused" part of his set as well.  Question: Why the volume pedal if the theremin has a volume antenna???  Is it so he can turn the thing off with the volume pedal when not in use??

Joe doesn't use his hands to control the theremine, instead of it he only uses the guitar neck for the pitch, and the pedal for the volume.

He does use it for Just got paid - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yaszOF0ekc (around 4.50) and he also used it for Woke up dreaming sometimes ...

Re: Theremins...

The Beach Boys were first in popmusic, I think they used it on Good Vibrations.
I wrote something about it in my review of the Joeshow in Vredenburg in Utrecht last November see www.bluesmagazine.nl  in Dutch!!

Re: Theremins...

When I saw joe last, he told me the theremin ran through the cat5.  the rest of the songs he uses it in are also ones that normally go through the cat5 as well, just got paid, etc.

So he plays the theremin and Category 5 at the same time?  That's really weird unless he puts it through the loop or something...now I'm really confused!  The new GP came out with Joe's entire rig updated so I'm going to have to check and see if there's any info in there.  Thanks Don!

Yup, right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvBC6X4pUd0 - it´s just a very, very short part with the theremin though.
Sorry for posting my own video, but I know that he uses it on this one for sure, so ... wink

Edited to add: it´s at 7:15 if you´re too impatient to watch the whole video. smile

Re: Theremins...

Ok,  its simpler than you think.. The Theremin runs through the spare normal input of my Category 5 JB-100 (yes 100 ) silver amp.  It gets used at the same time as the guitar goes through it. Reason number 356 to use 100 watt amps.  A keely DD-3 and Ernie Ball Volume pedal provide the delay and the expression.  You can use it through any good clear amp. But a dual amp set up is best..  I hope this helps
